The 12 Golden Words make up one quarter of all words and together with the Red Words, these make up, on average, one third of all words, based on frequency.

Refer to the Magic Words Wheel for details of how the frequency wheel shows this progressive attainment of sight words.
Magic Words Blank 10 Word Certificate
The first word that a child generally learns to read is their own name. Since early childhood children can have seen their name hundreds of times on their back-packs, clothes, books, bedroom door, pre-school paintings, locker, hook and lunch boxes. Children can often begin school recognising other family memers names, Mum, Dad and words in their environment such as stop, walk and school.

Below is a link to our blank Magic Words Certificate with space for 10 words to be printed in the stars. This certificate can be given at anytime that a child knows 10 words and should be used to encourage young readers and build confidence. Children who are beginning to read may, for example, recognise their own name, Mum, Dad, I, can, like, is, it, look & at. Therefore they can be given a Magic Words certificate for a mixed combination of words before actually learning all of the Golden Words or all of the Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Indigo, Violet, Pink, Purple, Aqua, Lemon and Lime Words.

Remember that the Magic Words certificates are given as soon as a child can recognise the words (they do not have to know how to write or spell them). Also, real reading requires children to read words across all of the Magic Words colour levels.

Example: I like..., I can..., Look at..., Here is..., This is a...

Always allow children ample opportunity to play games with the Magic Words Playing Cards by matching the words to the book the child is reading.

Are your Children Getting enough Sleep?
Many children in schools today are not getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep severely affects health, happiness and school performance. The best teachers, in the best schools with all the latest and greatest resources can do little to overcome the negative effects of not getting enough sleep. Children with insufficient sleep are at risk of poor concentration, short-term memory, inconsistent performance, behavior problems and moodiness. The chart below shows the average amount of sleep each age group needs.
