  • 10 Word Certificate Do I have to learn all the words to get a Certificate?

  • NO!

Below is a link to our blank Magic Words Certificate with space for 10 words to be printed in the stars. This certificate can be given at anytime that a child knows 10 words and should be used to encourage young readers and build confidence. Children who are beginning to read may, for example, recognise their own name, Mum, Dad, I, can, like, is, it, look & at. Therefore they can be given a Magic Words certificate for a mixed combination of words before actually learning all of the Golden Words or all of the Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Indigo, Violet, Pink, Purple, Aqua, Lemon and Lime Words.

Remember that the Magic Words certificates are given as soon as a child can recognise the words (they do not have to know how to write or spell them). Also, real reading requires children to read words across all of the Magic Words colour levels.

Example: I like..., I can..., Look at..., Here is..., This is a...

Always allow children ample opportunity to play games with the Magic Words Playing Cards by matching the words to the book the child is reading.

  • How should I start playing Magic Words?

  • To begin select from the set of playing cards some of the Magic Words contained in a book the child is reading ( take home reader) or some words that make a sentence. Keep adding more words to the set of familiar cards and begin playing one of the Magic Words cards games. Magic Memory is one of the easiest games and is certainly the favourite of children everywhere.

    Example:
    I like you.
    I like to play.
I like to play with you.
  • Do I have to learn the Golden Words first?

  • NO!

It is always best if the words a child is learning come form the current book they are reading or from a sentence that has been made up.
    For example: I can look.
    I
is a Golden Word, can is a Green Word and look is a Violet Word.
Thus the importance of mixing up the colours.
However the 12 Golden Words make up one quarter of all words and together with the Red Words, these make up, on average, one third of all words, based on frequency.
  • How many words should my child know in the first year of school?

  • The national benchmarks for reading state that reading at about text level five is a good level for children to reach by the end of their first year at school. Therefore if a child can master somewhere between 50-100 of their Magic 100 Words they have made a really good start. Most children will master all 200 words by the end of their first three years at school.
  • What should I do with the Blank cards?

  • The blank cards have been provided to write a child's first name, and other words of interest. It is a great way to engage a childs interest in reading as the first word many children learn to recognise is their own name.

    Example:
    Sam has a bike.
    Sam has a new bike.
Sam can ride his new bike.
Sam will ride his new bike.
